Why Track Variety & Lineage
If you grow a different variety every cycle, it’s easy to lose track. Keeping your own seed line? Even harder. GrowVPD Pro’s variety library plus the lineage view help with both:
- Pick from a catalogue of common vegetable, herb and fruit varieties (on Android), or type any name you like.
- Your own list — every variety you name on a grow is saved and offered first the next time.
- Lineage view shows the parents you have recorded for a variety and the varieties in your list that descend from it.
- Find grows by variety — search the diary by variety name and compare past grows side by side.
The variety library and lineage view are offered as a free feature: no Pro subscription required.
Setting the Variety on a New Grow
When you set up a grow, the variety field suggests names as you type:
- Varieties you have already used come up first.
- On Android, the catalogue is searched too — by name or by plant (“tomato”, “basil”, etc.).
- On Android, a grow can hold several varieties, each with its own plant count.
Pick a suggestion or keep typing your own name. You can edit it later.
Adding Your Own Variety
Not in the catalogue? Just type its name on the grow — it is saved to your variety list automatically. Your varieties are stored locally on your device.
Lineage Tree View
Open a variety’s details (from the header of a grow in the diary; on iPhone with View details in the variety field) to see its lineage:
- Ancestry: the parents you have recorded — add one with Add parent.
- Descendants: varieties in your list that name this variety as a parent.
The lineage is shown as a simple list rather than a drawn tree. A parent that is not in your variety list is marked as unlinked.
Seed-saving tip. When you keep seeds or take cuttings from an exceptional plant, save them as a variety of their own and add the original as its parent — the lineage then shows the line from one generation to the next.
Finding Grows by Variety
Type the variety name into the search box at the top of the Diary tab — the list narrows to the grows that used it. Tap Compare Grows and pick the ones you want to see their climate, growth and harvest numbers side by side.
Catalogue Source
The catalogue in the Android app is a short, curated list of common vegetables, herbs and fruit — tomatoes, peppers, basil, lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers, mint, spinach and kitchen herbs. It is not exhaustive — if your variety isn’t in there, just type its name on the grow.
Catalogue entries have a name, a group (such as heirloom or hybrid) and a short description.
